Looks fine - does the output of "ifconfig -a" match your hosts file?

Well, things work ok (for Netscape :) with XFree 3.3.6...
Both installing & running. Also, XFree86 4.0.2 appears to
have/install a.out libraries... (?)

But this still sounds like Yet Another Reason to ditch Netwcape...

I installed from the precompiled binaries from xfree86.org.
Alas, I've so far found almost *no* FreeBSD documentation
wrt XFree86-4... :-/

I am trying to set up a ssytem to recive characters on it's serial port. The
machine in question is a lightly loaded P75 with 4.2 STABLE on it, and this for a
UART:

sio0 at port 0x3f8-0x3ff irq 4 flags 0x10 on isa0
sio0: type 16550A

I have tried both hardware, adn xon/xoff handshaking, and if I stream characters at
thie machine from anothe FreeBSD machine, I get major character loss.

Originallly I was testing this with a perl script I jave written useing the
Device::Serial module, but at this point, I have backed off to suing minixom, to
eliminate programing errors on my part. If I place a 1/2 second delay after
thetransmission of each line from the transmiting machine, the problem goes away.
What's eve stranger, is that, without the delay, slower (ie 2400) baud rates, seem
to miss more characters than fast ones! Even assuming that I have a problem in the
wiring of my cable, such that hardware handshaking does not work, this should work
with xon/xoff handshaking, right? The characters I am streaming are all 7 bit ASCII.

Any sugestiosn?

I just successfully built and installed XFree86-4 from ports about one hour
ago, so it does work. I am now building KDE2.

My source and port tree was cvsup'd from stable just yesterday, and a new
world was installed.

I upgraded my home firewall today to sources as of last night and noticed
that traffic via NAT is rather slow. For example, an ftp from a machine
being nat'd I guess about 300Kbps. From the FreeBSD box, I get about 1Mb
on my DSL connection. If I use squid or a proper proxy, its not an
issue. This is both with the built in NAT on PPP and NATD by itself. Any
ideas as to how to track this down ?

hi all,

CVSUP'd last night, make buildworld on my way to bed....
make buildkernel OK
I learned the Hard Way(tm) to keep a functional kernel backup other than
kernel.old <(}: so:
#cp /kernel /kernel.works
#mv /modules /modules.works
#make installkernel fails to create the new modules directory (this used to
work). I didn't catch it, and needless to say the kernel was a bit unhappy
when it rebooted and couldn't find its modules. So....
#rm /modules (a file not a directory this time)

#cd /usr/src/compile/MYKERNEL
#make depend
#make
#make install

once again, install creates a file called /modules rather than a directory
/modules.

so....

#rm /modules
#mkdir /modules
#make install

works fine. Once again, this *USED* to work before I CVSUP'd last night; the
kernel install routine, on detecting no /modules directory would create it
correctly as a directory prior to putting all the files in. Now, it tries to
put all the files into one big file, and neddless to say the kernel can't
find, for example, /modules/linux.ko becuase there is no directory /modules/.
It isn't terribly difficult to work around, and once you are aware of it, it
shouldn't burn you again, but it WAS rather a pain, the more so because the
last time I did this (working on a sound driver port) it worked, so I
expected it to work this time.

Anyway, happy new year all, hopefully if it is *supposed* to work this way,
maybe knowing it will save someone else a bit a of grief, and if it is *not*
supposed to work this way, then someone can do something about
it....shouldn't be terribly difficult in the makefile to check for the
existence of /modules/ (as a directory) and create it first if it doesn't
exist.....

Not really, unless I'm getting something wrong. :)

The resolver (gethostbyname(3) & friends) is a libc routine. So
you won't see /etc/hosts queries on the network and needn't see
them when tracing syscalls.

But yes, one could watch DNS queries with some libpcap mechanism
(tcpdump being the most famous of them). But then it might be
easier to talk the named on the server side into logging, see
"man named" for details if that's what you have running there.
Unless the LAN is somewhat bigger and you need the filtering
capabilities tcpdump provides you with.

Yes its definatly time fot Netscape to become ELF... Is there any
plans or something for this to happen?
Netscape 6 is out now, surly when/if that gets proted to FreeBSD it
will be in ELF format?!

The problem is netscape itself, since it comes in binary format, anyone who
ports it doesn't have a choice into which format, I believe the bsdi version
of netscape is elf, but I'm not totally sure.

Corrected... I had it around the wrong way...
But sysinstall still shouldnt care so long as you are not using it
to create them...

Hmm its been a while since I have ever had more than one DOS partition
they are only useful for running little diagnostic programs in... Or
for a laptop to suspend to...

On a laptop I dont really see why anyone would want to duel boot with
windows, its not like you are going to be playing OpenGL games on a
laptop, and IMO thats all windows is useful for... And that is slowly
changing, since now Quake3 is ported to FreeBSD Im sure more games
will follow! :)

Or, you could build Mozilla from sources...

I'm running Freebsd 4.1.1-Release and having some problems with creating
tar files. I can untar files just fine, but when i try to create a tar
file with tar-c <filename> i always get:

tar: can't open /dev/rsa0 : Device not configured

I have never seen this problem before, but since I've installed my
current version of freebsd i've been getting this error every time. How
can i fix this?

You are supposed to use tar -cf filename otherwise it tries to tar
to the default device... which I guess for you is /dev/rsa0

So, I bought this ultra-slim Sony notebook (Vaio SR-5K) and it has
both USB and Firewire ports on it. That got me thinking. Has
anyone tried to develop IP drivers for either of those?

I suspect that would be even more useful than IP over a LapLink
cable on the parallel port for installs and ad-hoc network
connectivity.

I got an SMC USB 10bT adapter for free with my cable modem (they had
ISA, USB and PCMCIA, so I took the USB for novelty). It must be really
really cheap to make. shopper.com lists several for about $30, and 100bT
for $35. On the other hand, the "USB to USB" cable by SMC is $40!

Pretty neat to see kldload usb, kldload if_kue, usbd -e, and poof, a
new interface.

Any Firewire networking support? The 400 Mbit oughta screem.

100mbit USB ethernet is fairly silly since it cant possibly run at
that speed on USB... I think USB max is 12mbit...

USB ports are all part of a hub of sorts.. and you can get USB hubs
to add more ports, an interesting idea would to connect multiple
systems to the USB hub and have your self a 12mbit IP network...
Probably not possible but its an interesting idea!

USB is not a peer-peer scheme, so you'd have to have the appropriate
magic dongle. For most of people, that's probably an ethernet-USB
adapter. For firewire, under windows, Sony ships an IP stack.

The NetBSD folks have made some headway. Here's the comments the inital
if_fw.c:

revision 1.1
date: 2000/11/05 17:17:15;  author: onoe;  state: Exp;
First Prototype implementation of network interface part for IEEE1394 (if_fw).

Current status:
Only OHCI chip is supported (fwohci).
ping (IPv4) works with Sony's implementation (SmartConnect) on Win98.
        sometimes works but not stable.
Not implemented yet:
        IRM (Isochronous Resource Manager) functionality.
        Link layer fragmentation.
        Topology map.
More to do:
        clean ups
        MCAP
        charactor device part
        dhcp

You might want to use a piece of unsupported hardware, like your
DVD drive (for watching movies) or a SmartMedia-to-USB adapter.

Ok here is the deal, I am setting up a new server for a company (just =
happens to be my fathers). He has heard many things about Linux and has =
an NT server currently. The problem he "knows Windows really good", so =
about once a week he breaks things and calls me of course. He heard =
Linux was faster, better and of course cheaper than NT. So he wanted to =
go that route. However because I am technical support for him I would =
like to use FreeBSD instead.

I know Linux pretty well. I work with Solaris and NT but I dont know =
FreeBSD. I am the the newbie stages of learning it.

Here is the big problem, He just brought the parts for the server I =
spec'd out by yesterday. I have configured it and actually have FreeBSD =
installed. However I cannot get a few things working and it has to up =
and running by next Sunday 100%!!!!

So here is the machine:

Supermicro Motherboard P6DGU (Dual Processor, onboard SCSI, USB)
Duel PIII - 650MHz processors
256MB RAM
9G IBM SCSI
4G IBM SCSI
2G Seagate SCSI
18G IBM SCSI
Matrox G450 32MB
Hitachi 17" Monitor
Yamaha CD-RW

Here is what he wants: (These are the things that have to up and running =
by next weekend or I will be force to use Linux or NT)
file and print shares ( I dont know samba real good.....yet)
dialout internet connectivity so that when other machines want to go to =
internet it auto dials performs NAT and acts as the firewall (I know =
this is not real secure but it will be a temporary fix)
somehow to fetch email from his ISP accounts for all employees and =
download it locally to the server
IMAP so he can check mail for any machine
auto updates of OS
auto backups using the CD-RW

Eventually he would like faxes and voice mail to come and go from this =
machine by using email (not quite sure what I am going to do about that =
one)
Apache Web Server
PHP
MySQL
phpNuke

Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated. Please email me =
directly for I dont a chance to check the news groups all the time.

I will put together a website included on dads company page that =
explains how the system is configured and who all assisted.

TIA,

[snip list of things]

The only thing I see here that's FreeBSD specific is the ppp setup
which is really just too easy to setup:

http://www.freebsd.org/tutorials/ppp/index.html

The rest should be pretty much the same as on Linux.

All those things are faily simple to do... And are the same as
doing it under Linux, the only diffrence is I suggest you install
Apache and its addons from the ports collection...

That is all nice... But is there maybe a command line switch for this?
Or a way to specifiy this on the command line? It would be much better
to alias a command to that, since setting that envirnment variable
breaks things... (eg. ./configure)

Maybe you can try :
env CLICOLOR_FORCE=1 ls -G | less -R

Not very practical. A typical movie fills up 10GB. Yes, you
could rip it to something smaller, but that's still pretty impractical.

> Biuld support for your hardware!

I made an overture, but the silence from the USB guys was
deafening. I may have hit them at a busy time.

> Dont use SmartMedia-to-USB adapter :)

I already have it. It'd be a shame to have paid for it, and then
spend the money on a PCMCIA IDE adapter for it.

> Simple all your duel boot needs gone!

Almost. We don't have (and won't have for some time), support for
the Sorensen codec; therefore, many (most?) Quicktime clips cannot be
viewed, and for some time to come, we also won't have support for ASX
or ASF streams. I can live without most of that, but it's darned
inconvenient.

I've made some headway with porting LiViD (for DVDs), but time is
at a premium right now, and that work has come to a standstill.

Then there's mounting CD-RWs that haven't been closed out to
ISO9660.

I'm not bitching, mind you--I love FreeBSD, and only boot Windows
when I absolutely must. These are just reasons why I cannot yet
completely jettison Windows.

There was a firewire stack that was written for FreeBSD, but it hasn't
been integrated yet.
